Definition

extensible markup language. A standard maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). It defines a syntax that lets you create markup languages to specify information structures. Information structures define the type of information, for example, subscriber name or address, not how the information looks (bold, italic, and so on). External processes can manipulate these information structures and publish them in a variety of formats. Text markup language designed to enable the use of SGML on the World Wide Web. XML allows you to define your own customized markup language.

Cisco GSR 12000 1 port Gigabit Ethernet linecard crashes with a Cache Parity Exception

Symptom:

Symptoms for this issue are intermittent multiple crashes due to "Cache Parity Exceptions" (Sig=20)

CRASH INFO: Slot 3, Index 1, Crash at .............
......
Card Type: 1 Port Gigabit Ethernet, S/N xxxxxxxxxxx
System exception: sig=20, code=0xE430735C, context=0x41703FAE
System restarted by a Cache Parity Exception

Solution:

The workaround to this issue is to upgrade the Cisco IOS software to a release which has the CERF.

Cache Error Recovery Feature (CERF) is a software feature in Engine1 line cards that detects and corrects cache parity errors by flushing errors from the external CPU cache, and refreshing the cache line from DRAM. This feature provides intelligence in the CPU cache management algorithm that enables the CPU to recover from a cache memory parity error, preventing a line card crash without incurring a performance hit.

CERF is available in 12.0S software beginning in Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.0(21)S3.

Note: CERF is on by default. ? The activity of this software Error Correction Code (ECC) can be monitored by the command show controller cerf. To turn off the feature use the global configuration command no service cerf

For more information, see CSCdv85839.

If failures persists despite aforementioned, replace the linecard.

    No MAC-Address on Cisco Router
    Unvalidated

    Symptom:

In a rare case (especialy 3700 series routers), the router does not have a "burned in MAC-address" and you will not be able to ping or receive pings on the ethernet interface.

    Solution:

1.1  Verify the MAC-address is not present

1.1.1 run show command of ethernet interface IP address arp:

    router#show ip arp 10.1.1.2

1.1.2 run "show diag | include Chassis MAC Address (case sensitive)

    Result is "No Value Returned"

1.2  Set the Ethernet MAC address to an unused MAC Address in Configuration

    1.2.1 Configuration Terminal

    1.2.2 Interface FastEthernet 0/0

    1.2.3 mac-address xxxx.xxxx.xxxx

    1.2.4 CTRL+Z

    1.2.5 write

    2.  You can then download a special IOS from Cisco to repair the issue, however the Field Notice is old (FN - 25254) and the IOS did not have my serial number in the "Local table" and caused my 3745 to begin a continuous loop-boot without being able "BREAK" into the boot cycle to enter ROMMON mode.  I suggest leaving the MAC address as an unused address instead of downloading Ciscos special IOS.
